Mellon and Credit Commercial Discuss Ties

PITTSBURGH -- Mellon Bank Corp. is talking to Credit Commercial de France about joint marketing efforts and other forms of cooperation, Mellon's chairman, Frank V. Cahouet, said in an interview.

Mr. Cahouet said his company has certain products that are "global in nature," such as master trust and cash management, that the bank holding company would like to expand.

"We're just trying to figure out if there is some kind of product marriage that makes sense," Mr. Cahouet said. "We don't know, but all you risk is sweat equity."

A Mellon spokesman said the parties were not discussing the possibility of an equity investment.
