Two Colombian banks are offering mobile banking services using technology from the smart card maker Gemalto NV.
Gemalto, an Amsterdam company, said last week that the service is available to customers of Bancolombia and Banco AVVillas who have mobile phones that use the GSM format. Gemalto makes subscriber identity modules used in many phones, and its banking software is stored on these cards. More than 20 million people in Colombia have GSM phones.
The service is offered through the Colombian banking network Redeban Multicolor, which expects about 20% of potential users to soon be using it at least five times per month in the near future.
