More Time for Possible UBS Settlement

A federal judge Monday granted a joint request by the U.S. and Swiss governments and UBS AG to delay a key court hearing to give the parties more time to reach a possible settlement in a high-stakes tax dispute.

Court proceedings in the case were scheduled for Monday morning, but the parties asked for a three-week delay on Sunday.

As requested, U.S. District Court Judge Alan Gold in Miami delayed the proceedings until Aug. 3. The parties must confer with Gold by telephone on July 29.

The United States is seeking the identities of 52,000 American UBS clients who may have evaded taxes through secret accounts.
