Morgan Stanley Unit Appoints Tech Chief

SAN FRANCISCO - Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Online has promoted Darrell Davis, a senior vice president and director of technical operations, to executive vice president and chief technology officer, succeeding John MacIlwaine, who has left for an Internet start-up that has not yet been named, a spokeswoman said.

Mr. Davis said one of his primary tasks will be to integrate Discover Brokerage's trading systems with those of the parent company, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. He also is to help facilitate the sharing of customer data among company departments to encourage cross-selling.

The roughly 55 members of the technology division will report to Mr. Davis, who will report to Tom O'Connell, president and chief operating officer of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Online.

Mr. Davis, who has worked at Morgan Stanley since 1995, was instrumental in expanding the company's two production data centers. Previously, he headed the Unix support group for Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, which is part of the University of California at Berkeley.
