Moven Adds Card Deactivation Switch to App

Moven, a financial services startup, now lets users activate and deactivate debit cards from their smartphones.

The on/off switch feature has already been added to a handful of banks' mobile apps within the last 12 months, including City Bank Texas and USAA, while Simple also makes the card control feature available.

The concept of temporarily powering down debit cards through the mobile phone has been circulating for years. Diebold, for example, began selling a card management feature to banks in August of 2011 that lets consumers control their cards via their mobile devices.

The functionality points to a much larger industry trend: Finding ways to give consumers more control over their finances through a channel that continues to take on features that were once exclusive to branches.

Moven also announced its upgraded iOS app comes with enhanced data features designed to improve the accuracy of its feedback engine.
