NCR Starts ATM Line with a Kiosk Model

NCR Corp. introduced a line of automated teller machines last week that includes an advanced-function kiosk.

The Dayton, Ohio, company's SelfServ ATM family includes two models. The SelfServ 20 is a standard, cash-dispensing machine, and the SelfServ 30 offers various advanced functions, such as accepting bill payments and letting people pay municipal fines.

Kiosks have had mixed results in the banking industry. One of the best known models, the Vcom, was built by NCR and deployed in 7-Eleven Inc. convenience stores. 7-Eleven sold its ATM fleet to the ATM operator Cardtronics Inc. last year. The Houston company has said the Vcoms are not profitable when used for advanced functions and that it would consider shutting off those capabilities.

U.S. Bancorp is also testing kiosks.

NCR said it has a customer for the SelfServ 30, but spokeswoman Lorraine Russell would not name it.
