Some taxis began accepting payments from contactless credit and debit cards in June, and 5,000 are expected to do so by December. The New York rollout comes after one in Philadelphia, where 1,600 taxis take contactless payments using hardware from VeriFone Holdings Inc. The Philadelphia rollout began in November.

MasterCard and VeriFone are also testing the use of contactless card readers in taxis in Las Vegas. This test is to be completed this year.

The readers also let taxis accept payments from traditional magnetic-stripe cards and allow passengers to pay tips with their cards.
