Obopay Inc. of Redwood City, Calif., is offering a version of its person-to-person transfer software that permits people to send each other money through Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices.
On Thursday, Obopay announced the new version of its software, which already lets people use their mobile phones to initiate transfers drawn on prepaid accounts.
The company has said that it has four main types of users: families, students, the underbanked, and merchants such as independent musicians who sell low-priced goods through social networking Web sites. The BlackBerry software is expected to appeal to families, such as professional parents who want to send money to a child at college, Obopay said.
"The typical BlackBerry user epitomizes our need for convenience as professionals and consumers," Obopay's chief executive, Carol Realini, said in a press release.
