PowerPay Offers iPhone App

PowerPay LLC is offering an application for Apple Inc.'s iPhone that enables merchants to process credit and debit card transactions through e-onlinedata, PowerPay's e-commerce division.

The Portland, Maine, processor plans to target independent contractors, small businesses, and start-ups.

"Mobile devices are growing in popularity and usefulness. We want to make sure merchants have a payment processing option that is as mobile as they are," Stephen Goodrich, PowerPay's chief executive, said in his company's press release Tuesday.

PowerPay said the application it is marketing was developed by Inner Fence LLC, a Seattle software firm that focuses exclusively on iPhone applications.

This is at least the second application to come to market offering card processing on the iPhone. Randy Palermo, a software developer who does business as Rapadev LLC, introduced last month that an application called ProcessAway to perform similar payment functions.

Both applications use the Authorize.Net gateway, a small-merchant payment system operated by CyberSource Corp. of Mountain View, Calif.
