Prime-Credit Specialist Taking 1,300-Mile Spin for the Needy

Rob Nelson, president of National Preferred Mortgage, is spinning his wheels.

Mr. Nelson, a competitive cyclist, is pedaling from Southern California to Seattle to raise money for a relief organization.

Preferred Mortgage, based in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., specializes in loans to borrowers with stellar credit histories.

Mr. Nelson, 36, said a sermon by his church pastor helped inspire him to make the 1,300 mile journey. "He urged us to do something, and the ride evolved from that," Mr. Nelson said.

He started out Sunday and is expected to arrive next Wednesday at the headquarters of World Vision, one of the largest Christian relief and development organizations. Mariott Hotels, one of Mr. Nelson's sponsors, will put him up during the trek.

The mortgage banker would like to see the ride become an annual event, with other cyclists raising pledges and joining in the journey.
