Product to Prevent Underage Drinking

UreLife Ltd. said Wednesday that it has begun distributing a prepaid debit card in London that includes a photo of the cardholder and a proof-of-age hologram.

The UreLife card routes transactions across Visa Inc.'s network and bears the widely used Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram, which many U.K. organizations recognize as valid proof of age.

The cards are color-coded, depending on the users' age bracket, and the seventh and eighth digits of each account number indicate the cardholder's age group.

"Under-18s will have all the benefits and freedoms of cashless spending, while the proof-of-age mechanism will restrict purchases of alcohol, cigarettes, and other age-restricted products," Carl Horne, UreLife's director, said in a press release.
