ABN Amro Holding NV said in a press release Friday that it received a letter from Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, Banco Santander Central Hispano SA, and Fortis NV seeking exploratory talks with the Dutch company.
ABN Amro is in exclusive talks with Barclays PLC about a possible combination of the two companies.
The Dutch company said that its managing board and supervisory board will consider the letter carefully, in line with their responsibilities.
The Cleveland-based bank is projecting steady growth in net interest income even as credit losses remain manageable. But Chairman and CEO Chris Gorman also said that he thinks a recession is likely.
The first-quarter increase involved commercial real estate loans, including some problematic multifamily loans and an office credit, but none of the criticized loans were to consumers, officials at the Dallas company say. Further CRE deterioration is anticipated.
