Republic Bancshares Names Executive

Republic Bancshares of St. Petersburg, Fla., has named Alfred T. May as interim chief operating officer.

Republic said Mr. May will assist John W. Sapanski, who is chairman, president, and chief executive officer. The $2.3 billion-asset company owns Republic Bank and Republic Bank FSB.

Mr. May was chairman of First Federal Savings and Loan of Osceola County and its holding company, FFO Financial Group Inc. of Kissimmee, Fla., which Republic bought in September 1997. He has been a member of Republic's board since 1993.

Before joining FFO he was president of MidState Federal in Ocala, Fla. Earlier he was chief operating officer of Barnett Bank of Pinellas County, and still earlier he was president of Home Federal Savings Bank of St. Petersburg.
