RSA Offers Card-Size Version of Token

EMC Corp.'s RSA Security has begun offering password tokens in the shape of a standard payment card.

Like the key chain tokens issued by the Hopkinton, Mass., company's security unit, the card-size version announced Wednesday generates a one-time-use password for logging in to computer systems, providing a second factor of authentication beyond the standard user name and password.

The product is designed to resemble a payment card and fit in wallets alongside bank cards. No RSA customers have built the technology into their payment cards.

The cards use RSA's Authentication Manager 7.1 and SecurID Authentication Engine, which it also uses in key chain tokens.

EMC announced plans to make the card-shaped token in April, when it signed a two-year marketing agreement with Innovative Card Technologies Inc. of Los Angeles, which makes the hardware.
