SAN FRANCISCO - Visa U.S.A. said its system handled $40.7 billion in sales during the first quarter of 1992, 11.5% more than a year earlier.

The growth rate exceeded the 10% that Visa said was achieved by other major card companies.

The number of Visa cards in the United States rose 4.5%, to 143 million. They were used 528 million times.
