Shavlik Expands Virtualization Management

Virtualization used to be the next-big thing in data centers. Now, it’s virtualization management.

St. Paul, MN-based Shavlik Technologies this week introduced a new virtual machine management tool in its latest version of NetChk Protect that expands the company’s core  enterprise security management product for virtual-resource patch assessment and remediation. Shavlik’s solution arrives just two months after Credit Suisse spun off its home-grown virtualization management software into a stand-alone company, DynamicOps.

Gartner Research has pegged unmanaged virtualized environments as the enterprise administrator’s next big headache. The cost-containment, disaster-recovery and greening strategies that are behind most VM infrastructures are quickly overrun by manual processes behind patching, updating and tracking virtualized resources, and “will be as significant an issue as unmanaged devices were in 2007,” says Mark Shavlik, CEO of Shavlik Technologies.
