Smart Bits: Smart Card Reader Passes Microsoft Test

SCM Microsystems Inc. said its smart card readers have passed the testing of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Hardware Quality Labs, allowing SCM to display the "Designed for Windows" logo.

The company's SwapSmart readers are certified for compatibility with the Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems and with other similarly designated devices and applications.

As the SCM readers are linked to original equipment makers' desktop and notebook computers, for example, chip cards could be combined with digital certificates for securing Microsoft Internet Explorer or e-mail connections.
