Smart Cards: Calif. Firm in Pact to Refill N.Y. Metrocards

collection system for New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority, has won a contract for nearly $18 million to supply compact ticketing machines that it says will be "contactless smart card ready."

The small Metrocard Refill Machines are meant to complement larger vending installations that have been reducing lines at subway token booths. The big machines with touch screens take cash and plastic cards. The planned 1,000 refill machines, to be delivered starting next summer and with a similar screen presentation, will handle only debit and credit cards for reloading time or value on reusable Metrocards.

The ability to handle smart cards without their having to be inserted physically will be available "should New York City Transit decide to expand fare-payment options in the future," Cubic said.
