A growing number of North American consumers want to use automated systems for purchases and other transactions, according to a survey the Dayton, Ohio, automated teller machine company NCR Corp. released Thursday.
The percentage of U.S. and Canadian consumers who prefer doing business with companies that let them use self-serve systems, including the Internet, payment kiosks, ATMs, and retailer self-serve terminals, rose 11 percentage points from a year earlier, to 86%, the survey said. In addition, 56% of respondents said they are more likely to use a self-serve device now than they were last year.
The findings were part of a survey of 3,000 consumers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, China, and Japan conducted by BuzzBack Market Research LLC of New York.
"Whether we are banking, shopping, traveling, or interacting with a health-care provider, more of us look for and expect self-service as an essential convenience that improves the overall experience," Bill Nuti, NCR's chief executive, said in a press release.
In addition to ATMs, NCR offers check-in kiosks for hotels and airlines and self-serve checkout systems for retailers.
