Tech Bytes: IBM Introduces Add-Ons For Internet Commerce

International Business Machines Corp. announced at the recent Internet Commerce Expo several on-line enhancements for small and medium-size businesses.

One was CommercePoint Payments, a group of products that provide transaction automation and security according to the SET 1.0 Secure Electronic Transactions protocol, which IBM had a hand in developing with MasterCard, Visa, and other technology providers.

Also announced was a new version of the Net.Commerce merchant server with packages geared for businesses of varying size and on-line commerce sophistication; and Cryptolope Live, a Java-based program for information commerce, or sales of data and related software applications.

In another Expo development, Digital Equipment Corp. said it was joining forces with Wells Fargo & Co., Microsoft Corp., and Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Verifone subsidiary in the VirtualStore program.

"Large companies and midsize businesses can now purchase a total solution for their Internet commerce requirements," said Ted McKie, Digital's director of Internet business development.

Digital will be offering hardware, software, and related services, including the Microsoft Site Server Enterprise Edition. Wells will process credit card payments using Verifone's VPos system.

Wells sees VirtualStore as an enhancement to its pioneering efforts in card processing on the Net, said Michelle Banaugh, vice president of marketing, electronic payment solutions.
