Tech Bytes: Security Dynamics Appoints Senior VP

Veteran Silicon Valley marketer Scott Schnell has been promoted to senior vice president of Security Dynamics Technologies Inc. and its subsidiary, the data encryption company RSA Data Security Inc.

Mr. Schnell, RSA's vice president of marketing since 1996, will direct corporate and product marketing for both organizations, which are becoming increasingly integrated two years since their merger.

Much of his attention will be focused on SecurSight, a comprehensive line of enterprise security products. "It is the right time to combine Security Dynamics' marketing strength with that of the company that invented public key infrastructures," said Art Coviello, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the two companies.

Mr. Schnell reports to both Mr. Coviello and Al Sisto, chief operating officer of RSA.

The responsibilities of Dave Power also go to Mr. Schnell. Mr. Power has left as Security Dynamics' vice president of marketing and corporate development to become president and chief executive officer of Novera Software, Burlington, Mass., which specializes in Java-based server systems.

Mr. Schnell built RSA's marketing organization and developed strategy for the company's widely used software and tool kits. Before 1996 he spent 15 years with such companies as Apple Computer Inc., Photonics Corp., and McKinsey and Co.
