Tech Bytes: Tech Chief Is Named At First Chicago NBD

First Chicago NBD Corp. has hired telecommunications industry veteran William H. Elliott 3d as its first chief information and technology officer. He will start in mid-October.

He had spent 23 years at AT&T Corp., most recently as managing director of AT&T Ventures, a Basking Ridge, N.J., subsidiary that invests in information technology projects.

A spokesman for $114 billion-asset First Chicago NBD said Mr. Elliott's appointment marks the first time a single executive will oversee companywide technology initiatives.

Prior to its 1995 merger with NBD Corp. of Detroit, First Chicago Corp. had an executive vice president of technology - Donald Hollis - in its corporate services unit. Mr. Elliott's responsibilities will be more sweeping.

Mr. Elliott, an executive vice president, will have responsibility for computer systems and networks throughout First Chicago NBD, and he will lead information technology initiatives.

James McCord, head of information services, and Tyrone Davenport, head of information processing, will report to him.

Mr. Elliott also will act as chairman of a newly formed information technology committee. He reports to David Vitale, vice chairman.

Mr. Elliott began his career as a researcher at Bell Laboratories. He earned a master's degree and a doctorate in computer science from Pennsylvania State University.
