Banking stocks were mixed in moderate trading on Thursday as investors sought new clues on the strength and direction of the nation's economy.

BankAmerica Corp. rose 25 cents to $44.125, while Norwest Corp. slid 50 cents to $22.875. Fleet Financial Group was up 50 cents to $31.125, while First Bank System was down 50 cents to $28.875.

Among the best gainers were Comerica Inc., up 62.5 cents to $28.50, Bankers Trust New York Corp., up 87.5 cents to $77.25, and U.S. Bancorp. of Oregon, up 62.5 cents to $24.625.

Among those slipping sharply, Integra Financial Corp. was off $1 to $44 in late trading.
