Unisys to upgrade check processing.

Unisys Corp. said it plans to upgrade its check processing system to work better with software sold by J.D. Carreker and Associates of Dallas.

The upgrade is expected to make it easier for banks that use. Unisys check sorting equipment and software to participate in the Electronic Check Clearing House Organization, an association of 58 banks that hope to speed check clearance and reduce fraud losses by sending check data to each other electronically.

J.D. Carreker is a consultant to Eccho, an also sells software called CheckLink that nearly two dozen banks in the association use to send and receive check data.

Four of these banks - the Bank of California, Barnett Banks Inc., Comerica Inc. and Citicorp - also use Unisys' Item Processing System, which is mainframe software that operates Unisys check sorters.
