Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank, which provides online bill payment services to U.K. billers, said it plans to incorporate the security technology currently used in the Verified by Visa system.
Visa Inc. developed the 3D Secure technology to let issuers prompt merchants for authentication during an online transaction.
The Alliance & Leicester PLC unit said it would use 3D Secure to improve security when people pay their bills at biller sites.
"With a growing number of people taking advantage of the convenience and control offered by online payments, security is obviously vital," Graham Long, Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank's head of payment services, said in a press release Friday. "3D Secure will provide businesses and payers with enhanced security."
