VeriFone Adjusts Card Readers in Taxis

VeriFone Holdings Inc. has changed its security policies for credit card systems in New York City taxis, to no longer allow drivers who own their vehicles to access card numbers online.

Drivers had previously been able to enter a user name and password on the San Jose, Calif., company's Taxitronic site to see full customer numbers and expiration dates, the New York Sun reported Monday. Fleet owners will still have access to the data.

VeriFone's touch-screen payment units are in 45% of the city's cabs that have global positioning technology. The company is one of three firms approved by New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission to install the devices.

VeriFone vice president Dave Faoro said that the change was a business decision and not the result of the newspaper's disclosure.
