An Australian provider of payment systems for taxis has agreed to buy 20,000 mobile terminals from VeriFone Holdings Inc., the San Jose, Calif., terminal maker said on Thursday.
It said that Cabcharge Australia Ltd. of Sydney would offer its Vx810 terminal, including a contactless card acceptance module, to cab operators. VeriFone described the deal as a "multimillion-dollar contract."
About 96% of taxis in Australia, as well as some limousines and water taxis, use Cabcharge systems. It is to begin installing the VeriFone terminals in October and expects to complete the project by December of next year.
VeriFone systems are already used in taxis in New York, Philadelphia, and Mexico City.
