Vt.'s Banknorth names CEO of Howard Bank.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Howard Bank, a subsidiary of Banknorth Group Inc., has appointed Richard J. Fitzpatrick president and chief executive.

Mr. Fitzpatrick, formerly the executive vice president and managing director of loans for Banknorth, will work closely with Michael Tuttle, executive vice president and senior lender of Howard, who has been acting president since late October.

Mr. Fitzpatrick has directed commercial lending at Banknorth's five community bank subsidiaries since July 1992.

Before that, he worked at National Westminster Bank USA in New York. He started in 1973 and advanced to executive vice president of the special markets group, handling a $5 billionloan portfolio.

Howard has 14 branches in northern Vermont. Other Banknorth subsidiaries are Farmington (N.H.) National Bank, First Vermont Bank, Franklin Lamoille Bank, Granite Savings Bank and Trust Co., Woodstock National Bank, and Banknorth Mortgage Co.
