Alipay, SnapPay bring Chinese mobile wallet to Canadian grocer

Canadian cross-border payment provider SnapPay is expanding its two-year partnership with China's Ant Financial to bring the Alipay app to the country's FoodyMart grocery chain.

SnapPay has helped Alipay establish merchant adoption in Canada and parts of the U.S., enabling Chinese tourists to make purchases with their own currency through the Alipay mobile wallet.

“North American retailers gain access to billions of untapped potential revenues by simply offering their customers the option to pay with the mobile apps and currency that they’re familiar with,” Chris Renton, chief growth officer of SnapPay, said in a Monday press release.

The groundwork for Alipay and the competing WeChat Pay wallet to operate in Canada was established two years ago when the China-based mobile payments operators worked through the Canadian tourism bureau to initiate partnerships in the country.

Founded in Toronto in 2017, SnapPay works with both Chinese mobile payment companies. The arrangements have helped Chinese consumers buy goods both in-store and online in Canada, where the tourism bureau reports more than 600,000 Chinese tourists visit each year.

“We are glad to be working with SnapPay, one of our partners in North America, to better connect Chinese consumers to North American merchants and to bring about the most seamless experience for them,” Yulei Wang, general manager of Alipay North America, said in the release.
