American Express extends instant card-provisioning to PayPal

American Express has created a path for PayPal to immediately accept digital versions of consumer credit cards as soon as the cards are approved.

When Amex approves new credit card customers online, the account information appears on the screen. That number can be automatically added to users' PayPal accounts for immediate purchases, Amex announced Monday.

With this move Amex aims to encourage users to begin spending the moment a card is approved and issued, while ensuring users embed their Amex card in PayPal’s digital wallet.

Amex first rolled out its Instant Card Number process to digital wallets in November 2020, enabling users to add it to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay for immediate purchasing before the actual card arrives in the mail.
