American Express Co. says starting Nov. 15 it no longer will offer a free companion ticket with the purchase of a full-fare domestic airline ticket for holders of its Platinum and Centurion cards because of low cardholder demand, the company says. "We are decommissioning the program because a relatively small number of cardholders used it," an AmEx spokesperson tells CardLine. The Domestic Companion Airfare Program was handled by a third-party marketing company and certain restrictions, including blackout travel dates, applied. AmEx says it will continue to offer a free companion fare when Platinum or Centurion customers buy a first-class or business-class international ticket. Platinum cardholders pay a $450 annual fee, while holders of the Centurion card pay a one-time $5,000 initiation fee and an annual fee of $2,500.
