Amex expands Facebook Messenger bot options

In expanding its work with Facebook, American Express has introduced the Add a Card feature on its bot for Facebook Messenger.

Add a Card allows U.S. consumers and Open Card members to add their card and billing information for use when making purchases through Facebook.

After adding a card to their Facebook account, card members can make in-game purchases, or purchases on the shop sections of business pages in Facebook, in addition to other Messenger commerce functions.

“This most recent step in our long relationship with Facebook demonstrates just how quickly American Express can iterate new features and develop innovation with great partners,” Dave Wolf, vice president of digital partnerships and development at American Express, said in a Dec. 12 press release. “The speed of our tech development continues to allow us to meet our card members where they are, and we look forward to the additional benefits we can deliver to them on this powerful channel.”

Three months ago, David Marcus, the head of Facebook Messenger, revealed the company was speaking to card brands, processors and payments providers to help Messenger bots accepts payments directly.

American Express was already involved in that initial process, announcing a collaboration with Facebook in June in which the companies would test an Amex bot that would allow customers to receive real-time transaction notifications and marketing information about card benefits and services.

“This new feature comes as Facebook and Messenger introduce new commerce initiatives,” Kahina Van Dyke, Facebook’s director of global commerce and payments partnerships, said in the release. “We’ve seen commerce play an increasing role in how people interact with one another and we’re excited to see our partners at Amex continue to create new ways to enable people to make seamless purchases with this new Add a Card feature.”

Facebook Messenger Payments launched in July of 2015, about a year after Marcus left his position as head of PayPal to join Facebook and further develop Messenger. The Messenger app enabled users to initiate free money transfers from a linked Visa or Mastercard debit card through a payment button.

Less than a year later, the potential for payments in Facebook Messenger bots became apparent as companies began to formulate plans for having a presence within the service in which a user saying or typing an idea into a Messenger search box would result in all relevant bots appearing.
