TO encourage people to move towards electronic payments and away from paper money and cheque-based transactions, Government duty on ATM cards and debit cards is halving.
This will apply from January 1 next and it will mean the stamp duty charged on ATM and debit cards will only be E2.50 per card instead of E5.
The charge for a joint ATM/ debit card will halve from E10 to E5.
The stamp duty on cheques is going up from 30c to 50c per cheque to further discourage people from writing cheques.
This new rate is effective on all cheques written from today.
The move was broadly welcomed by the banks and Financial Services Ireland, the national financial services industry body.
