The average United Kingdom college student credit card balance stands at £219 (US$399 or 272 euros), according to a survey from Halifax, a division of HBOS PLC. UK-based online research company Opinionpanel Research conducted the survey on behalf of Halifax and polled 60,000 students in May. The survey showed 37% of students had a credit card. Female college students have a higher average balance than males—£255.50 compared with £173.20. The survey revealed most students view credit cards as an emergency backup plan to pay for unexpected expenses. Halifax offers students a credit card that features text alerts to remind cardholders of balance information. Halifax did not respond to requests for comment by CardLine Global.
