BBVA to Issue American Express Card for Basketball Fans

BBVA Compass is planning to issue a new credit card in partnership with American Express and the National Basketball Association.

The BBVA Compass NBA American Express Card will be the first credit card to bear the NBA brand. Users can choose a preferred team's logo for the card, which is expected to be available in a few weeks.

Through this partnership, BBVA is looking to expand beyond the United States' Sunbelt region. By launching the BBVA Compass NBA American Express Card, the company plans to further grow its digital portfolio after launching NBA Banking in April 2013.

"Our card …[will] grow our profile and our business in some of the country's most dynamic markets outside of our footprint and far beyond thanks to American Express's vast global network," said Manolo Sanchez, chairman of BBVA Compass, in a Feb. 13 press release.

Besides being the official bank of the NBA, BBVA Compass also has stadium naming rights to Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo and the National Women's Soccer League's Houston Dash. Additionally, the bank's parent company, BBVA Group, sponsors the top soccer league in Spain.
