China UnionPay says it has struck a deal with Global Payments Inc., a processor based in the United States, to expand the Chinese payment card network's merchant acceptance in Canada. "The company will initially launch the service for merchants in tax-free shops, retail stores and restaurants," a spokesman for UnionPay tells CardLine Global. UnionPay, in an effort to become a leading international card brand, recently has signed a series of acceptance and processing deals. Earlier this month, Rahaxi Inc., a European processor based in Ireland, signed a deal with UnionPay's online-payment subsidiary to enable Chinese consumers to buy more goods from European Web merchants (CardLine Global, 9 Jan.). UnionPay has signed similar deals in Japan and Indonesia.
