Commonwealth Bank of Australia has begun to deploy contactless-payment terminals in Australia, the bank announced in a statement. Commonwealth says it will install 2,000 terminals by the end of the year and will increase deployments substantially by the end of 2010. The bank is installing the terminals, which accept both MasterCard Worldwide's PayPass and Visa Inc.'s payWave technology, at selected IGA and Red Rooster stores and in Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. Cardholders paying for goods less than AU$100 (US$91) will need only to tap their debit or credit card on the terminals to pay, the statement notes. The bank also plans to deploy the terminals in high-volume retail environments, such as coffee shops, grocery stores and news agencies, according to the statement. The bank declined to reveal to CardLine Global the cost of the rollout or the name of the terminal manufacturer.
