Average credit card debt was $1,717 per card borrower during the second quarter ended June 30, a 2.6% increase from the previous quarter's $1,673 average and an 8.6% increase from $1,581 in the second quarter of 2007, according to a TransUnion Trend Data report. Conversely, the credit card delinquency incidence rate, which is the ratio of borrowers at least 90 days past due, declined for the second quarter in a row. The ratio of credit card borrowers delinquent on one or more of their credit cards declined to 1.04% during the second quarter, down from 1.19% in the previous quarter. However, the delinquency incidence rate rose in the second quarter of this year from 0.91% during the same period of 2007. The report attributed recent delinquency-rate decreases to tighter consumer-lending policies relative to last year and higher median household income for the second quarter, which enabled consumers to pay off past-due debt.
