dLocal expands e-commerce payments in Southeast Asia

Less than a month after landing new funding from investors, global e-commerce payments provider dLocal is entering three new markets in Southeast Asia.

The dLocal platform that connects global enterprise merchants with consumers in emerging markets is now providing local payment methods in Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Earlier this month, Montevideo, Uruguay-based dLocal obtained $150 million in funding to boost its valuation past $5 billion and bolster its services in Latin America and Africa, while also expanding into the new markets.

dLocal cites the growing e-commerce digital footprint in Southeast Asia, saying transaction volume surged to more than $62 billion last year during the global pandemic and in-store lockdowns.

The dLocal platform will provide payment capabilities for e-wallets, cash and international card payments, as well as chargebacks and refunds.

“For merchants looking to take advantage of the explosive growth of e-commerce in Southeast Asia, the shift towards digitized marketplaces that has catalyzed during the pandemic presents enormous opportunity,” Sue-Ann Seet, head of Asia expansion at dLocal, said in a Wednesday press release.

“The biggest challenge is disparate payment methods that are not easily scaled across these various markets," Seet added. "dLocal’s payments platform will now allow merchants to support the preferred payment methods in each of these countries to empower localized payments for sustainable, scalable growth.”

Merchants selling into Malaysia can accept payments from e-wallets Mayabank2u, Boost, Grab Pay and Touch 'n Go, in addition to bank transfers and cash payments through 7-Eleven locations.

Those selling in the Philippines can accept international cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, as well as card payments in up to 12 installments and accept sales without a CVV.

Merchants selling into Vietnam can accept international cards as well as local credit cards and wallets such as VTC Pay, Vietcombank, Techcombonk and others.

The company will also add cash payments and local bank transfers for those selling into Thailand.

dLocal now powers local payments in 29 countries across Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa through its API-connected, one platform concept.
