FIS Delivers UnionPay Gift Card for U.S. Travelers

Financial services technology provider FIS is providing UnionPay prepaid cards for U.S. consumers traveling to Asia.

The UnionPay Gift Card allows travelers to make purchases at nearly 34 million merchant locations worldwide, including everywhere in China that accepts payment cards.

"If you're going to Asia, you need a UnionPay Gift Card," Miriam Park, general manager of UnionPay International America, said in a May 26 press release.

Consumers can obtain the gift cards at their local bank or credit union, Park said, making it "another step forward in establishing the UnionPay brand in North America and a wonderful addition to a bank or credit union's payment options for its customers and members."

UnionPay cited Statista research that says more than 3 million people are expected to visit China from the U.S. in 2016, with the number growing to 6 million in 2020.

UnionPay Gift Cards are accepted in 157 countries and regions. Upon returning to the U.S., a cardholder can use any remaining funds on the card at most U.S. merchant locations, UnionPay said.

Consumers can load up to $1,000 onto the single-use UnionPay Gift Card, which is issued by Bancorp Bank, pursuant to a license from UnionPay International Co., Ltd.
