Financial services technology provider Fiserv has updated its capabilities to handle EMV-chip card production entirely in-house.
The Brookfield, Wis.-based company, which already provided most other EMV-related services, will now begin embedding EMV chips into payment cards during the plastic manufacturing process. The U.S. card networks set a deadline of October 1, 2015 for most companies that handle card payments to update to EMV security, which deters counterfeiting. Any company that misses that deadline faces a shift in fraud liability (gas stations have until October 2017).
"Adding milling and embedding capabilities to our already sophisticated facilities is a strategic move that enables Fiserv to deliver a one-stop-shop EMV solution," said Jorge Diaz, president of Fiserv's output solutions division in a release. "This is an important consideration for our clients as they prepare for the October 2015 liability shift deadline."
The milling process is vital to embedding an EMV chip. To convert to EMV, a card must have a cavity milled into it to house the chip; this is a multi-step process, and handling it in-house improves the quality of the final product, Fiserv said.
