Google Adds M-Commerce Version of Mobile Wallet

Google Inc. added a mobile commerce payment option to Google Wallet, which already supports online and point of sale purchases.

The new mobile commerce option allows shoppers to use their Google accounts to make purchases on a merchant's mobile website. The “Buy with Google Wallet” button appears on the merchant's checkout page and allows users to access a card account stored with Google Wallet.

Google launched Google Wallet last year as a way to allow consumers to make payments at the point of sale using a mobile phone with an embedded Near Field Communication chip. Late last year, Google also folded Checkout, an online payment system it launched in 2006, into Google Wallet. 

The new feature, like the micropayment feature Google announced last month, appears to be more of an update to the Checkout online payment system than the Wallet in-person payment system. 

One of Google's early partners for the mobile checkout system is 1-800-Flowers.com, which is offering a $10 discount to Google Wallet users. 1-800-Flowers.com is also an early partner of Visa's V.me online payment system.
