HSBC Issuing New Travel Credit Card In Sri Lanka

Targeting Sri Lanka’s business frequent flyers, HSBC Corp. has launched a premium credit card in that country that includes a variety of travel discounts, the issuer announced Jan. 26.

The Visa-branded HSBC Signature card, which comes with no annual or sign-up fees, includes discount offers on many airlines operating in the country, a spokesperson for the bank tells PaymentsSource. These include business class discounts of up to 20% on such carriers as Cathay Pacific Airways, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Malaysia Airline, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and SriLankan Airlines, he says.

“Further discounts would be given to those cardholders who opt for online bookings instead of offline purchases of their air tickets,” the spokesperson adds, noting HSBC had not previously offered separate online discounts.

Among other perks, cardholders will receive the best available rates for more than 800 hotels worldwide and a 50% discount on access to some of the world’s popular golf courses at business destinations.

The bank is issuing the first Signature cards to its existing platinum cardholders whose monthly salaries exceed 200,000 Sri Lankan rupees (US$1,755 or 1,334 euros), according to the spokesperson.

“The card would later be issued to new applicants beginning in February,” he says, adding that a new cardholder would have to be at least 18 years of age and earn at least 200,000 Sri Lankan rupees per month.
