Passengers using the local Northern Railways train network in India will be able to buy local tickets beginning next week using prepaid smart cards, an official from the operator's information-technology department tells CardLine Global. "This is a contactless chip smart card," he says. "Commuters can place the card on vending machines located at 30 stations and enter their route details to get the tickets." According to the official, the operator has invested 32 million rupees (US$6.95 billion) to install the system for stations between Delhi and Paliwal in the National Capital Region. "In all, 75 vending machines have been installed at the stations," he adds. "The cards will be available in denomination ranging from 50 to 1,000 rupees and will be reloadable." According to the official, about 80,000 tickets are sold in the region everyday.
