Consumers in India spent 18.7 billion rupees (US$32 million or 26 million euros) using debit cards in September, up 23.8% from 15.1 billion rupees during the same month last year, according to the Reserve Bank of India, the country's central bank. Consumers made 12.1 million debit card transactions, up 16.3% from 10.4 million. Banks had issued 156.2 million debit cards by 30 Sept., up 30.4% from 119.8 million cards year earlier, the Reserve Bank says. By contrast, consumers spent 49 billion rupees using credit cards in September, down 13.1% from the 56.4 billion rupees during the same month last year, the Reserve Bank says. Consumers made 19.1 million credit card transactions in September, down 12.8% from 21.9 million. India had 21.3 million credit cards in circulation as of 30 Sept., down 20.5% from 26.8 million a year earlier.
