The state of Meghalaya in India has set up an online system consumers may use to pay direct taxes, an official from the state’s financial ministry tells PaymentsSource.

When the system is active by the end of this month, it will accept all forms of state taxes, including property and sales taxes, according to the official.

“The system will be able to accept payments via online banking and debit cards issued in association with Visa and MasterCard,” he says. “Unfortunately, credit cards are not allowed for payment of taxes.”

Taxpayers will be able to use this service for free, and they will get an online receipt for the tax payments, he says. “State Bank of India will acquire payments in this system,” the official tells PaymentsSource.

In a second phase expected to launch next year, consumers only will be able to pay their taxes online to reduce administrative expenses. The state also plans to launch a mobile-payment system by the end of next year, according to the official.
