“All domestic meter holders and commercial establishments, excluding industries, can now pay their electricity bills online,” says Dilip Pawar, general manager for billing at the board, more formally known as Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd.

The utility set up the online payment system in association with Mumbai-based HDFC Bank Ltd., which will acquire the bill-payment transactions, Pawar tells PaymentsSource.

Customers will be able to pay with debit and credit cards that carry the MasterCard or Visa brands, Pawar says, noting the utility has 1.5 million customers. “We expect at least a million customers to use it in the first month,” he adds.
