The banks currently operate the country’s two largest standalone ATM networks. One bank official believes the deal will boost business for both banks.

The ATM-expansion came about through an agreement between Jakarta-based PT Bank Mandiri and Rintis Sejahtera, an ATM service vendor that works with Bank Central Asia and others, according to a spokesperson at Bank Mandiri.

Bank Central Asia brings 7,000 ATMs of its own to the Rintis network, which has 22,000 ATMs across Indonesia encompassing a total of 48 banks, the spokesperson said.

“Bank Mandiri will be the 49th member and it will bring its approximately 9,000 ATMs to the Rintis network, thereby increasing the ease (of getting cash) for customers of all the member banks,” he adds.

When the deal goes into effect in November, Bank Mandiri’s 10 million customers and Bank Central Asia’s 9 million customers will be able to use one another’s bank ATMs.

“They will be able to make cash withdrawals, transfers funds to other banks and deposit checks as well,” he says. “The deal is expected to cause a rise in transaction volume for both the banks.”
