Intuit Adds Card Scanning to GoPayment for iPad

Intuit now lets iPad owners who use its GoPayment mobile card reader scan credit and debit cards with the tablet's built-in camera.

Users access the new feature by selecting "scan card" within the GoPayment app, then holding the card in front of the device's camera to complete the transaction. The transactions are charged at the card-not-present rate, starting at 2.75%.

Intuit has offered the feature to iPhone users since March. One in six GoPayment users has tried using a credit card, the company says in a June 21 blog post.

The addition is designed to give merchants a way to accept card payments if they forget to bring the GoPayment card reader, Intuit says. The reader attaches to a phone or tablet to allow merchants to accept swiped card payments.

Intuit has been moving GoPayment into international markets over the past year.

Many of Intuit's rivals are also updating their mobile card readers. Its rival Square just redesigned its mobile wallet and began selling an iPad stand for brick-and-mortar stores. PayPal added tablet support for its PayPal Here card reader, and the eBay unit is offering free processing through the end of the year as part of a promotion.

Other mobile-payment players include Punchey, iZettle, Payleven  and Leaf.
