iZettle Debuts Technology for Payments Developers

Swedish mobile point of sale company iZettle has launched a software development kit (SDK) to allow other companies to leverage iZettle's technology to build payments services.

The SDK is a package of pre-written code that developers can use in their own applications. The tools—which are currently available to iOS developers, with an Android version expected in the near future—also support card readers and receipt printers, the company announced  on Jan. 23.

iZettle's SDK beta test users include 24/7 Taxi, a cab ordering service; iKentu, a restaurant point of sale system; and Lavu Point of Sale, which also serves the restaurant industry. iZettle expects a broader range of merchants now that the SDK is public, the company says.

Stockholm-based iZettle offers mobile point of sale services in Europe and recently expanded to Latin America.

A number of payment companies extend their tools to external parties. Stripe has a number of clients, including Shopify, which used Stripe to extend its processing capabilities. Dwolla also enables other developers to build payment applications. Braintree, which eBay acquired in December for $800 million, offers tools that support payments for companies like Uber and Airbnb.
